The Lord Jesus was leaving Judea and on His way to Galilee. Although most Jews would go the long way around Samaria to avoid contact with the religious half-breed Samaritans, the Bible tells us that the Lord Jesus must needs go through Samaria. He had an appointment there at the well with a soul-weary, soul-thirsty woman.
She came in the middle of the day to draw water. She had had a wicked life. The Lord Jesus knew all about her. He said to her, "Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:13-14). She discovered Him to be the Messiah, the Christ, the promised Saviour (John 4:25-26).
Later the Lord Jesus said, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:37-38).
Colorless, odorless, and tasteless, water is the most common and most important substance on earth. It is the only substance that occurs in all three states of matter--solid, liquid, and gas--at ordinary temperatures. It covers three-fourths of the earth's surface. Actually 97% of the earth's water is in the oceans, 2% in glaciers and less than one percent is fresh in rivers and lakes and streams. Water actually has a bluish tint when very deep.
Water is unique in that many other substances dissolve in water. It is also unique in that it expands when it freezes. At four degrees Centigrade water expands. Hence, ice floats on top of water. Ice always forms from the top to the bottom. Think what would happen if this were not true. Lakes and ponds would freeze from the bottom, eventually freezing out all living things. Ice on the surface provides a barrier to hold in heat and keep the lake or pond from freezing over, except in very cold spells. Water under the ice is always more than two degrees above freezing. God made it just right.
Water is necessary for all life forms. We could live weeks without food but only days without water. Planet earth is located just the right distance from the sun to maintain water for life.
The Lord Jesus said to the woman at the well, in John chapter 4, Whoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. Just as water is necessary for physical life on earth, the Lord Jesus is necessary for eternal life in heaven. He alone can save and satisfy the soul forever. By His death and resurrection He makes it possible for us to have forgiveness of sin and everlasting life.
Has the Lord Jesus Christ satisfied your soul?
As the [young deer] panteth after
the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
Psalm 42:1-2
Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35
