A missionary went to visit a young Indian who was dying. He was stripped of all comfort and was lying on a heap of dried leaves.
“My poor friend,” said the missionary, “what can I do for you?”
“Missionary,” answered the Indian. “I am the happiest person in the world and I need nothing.”
“What do you mean?”
“God is my Father, the Lord Jesus is my Savior, and heaven is my home. The Lord Jesus will soon take me to be with Him forever. What else do I need?”
“How do you know this?” asked the missionary in order to be assured of the reality of his convictions.
“Do you see this book?” replied the sick man, showing him a well used New Testament. “This is my best friend. It answers all my questions. I would not give it up for all the gold in the world.”
The happy Indian pressed the New Testament to his heart and then added, “However, I must part from it one day, perhaps, very soon; but then I will not need it, for I will see my Savior face to face and I shall be able to talk directly with Him. Then you will give this book to another that he may also learn to live and die in perfect joy.”
Reader, what are you doing with the Bible which you have in your home? Have you become wise unto salvation in reading it? Has it brought to you the peace and joy that filled the young Indian’s heart?
