Little Things
It was a day of darkness for God=
s people Israel. God=s hand of discipline had been against them because they had failed to love the Lord with all their hearts, to serve and cling to Him, to keep His commandments and walk in His ways. Lessons learned, a small group returned to the land, but alas the beautiful temple was gone, ruined. Things were not as they should be, nor were they as they could be. The work of rebuilding was discouraging. It seemed such a small effort. Then came the Word of the Lord saying, Abe strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts,@ (Haggai 2:4a), AFor who hath despised the day of small things?@ (Zechariah 4:10a).
Small things mean a lot. God uses little things when they are given to Him. God takes little ones and makes them strong and mighty. God takes what seems unimportant and makes it very important. That way He gets the credit. ANot by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts@ (Zechariah 4:6).
All of life in the sea depends ultimately on plankton, the many tiny, tiny living things that drift in the surface waters. Many planktonic animals can swim, but their movements are insignificant in relation to the sea=s currents.
Plant life in the sea is in the top layer where there is enough light for food making (or photosynthesis). With few exceptions, the drifting plant life, called phytoplankton, is made up of single-celled living things.
The tiny drifting animals called zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton or on one another. They must keep swimming to remain near the surface where their food is.
The amount of all ocean life is tied to the amount of food-making phytoplankton. These plants form the first link in the ocean food chains since the zooplankton which feed on them is the food of many other animals. These in turn are eaten by larger fish which are themselves eaten by seals and some whales.
Little things, things which cannot even be seen without a microscope, are so very important to the ocean=s food chain and the food chain of all of life. And the same God who made and rules the world and the worlds rules over these little things. God is interested in little things. There is nothing and no one too small.
God is interested in your little life and mine even down to the smallest detail. 1 Peter 5:7 says, AHe cares for you@ or it matters to Him about you. How much does it matter to you about God? The infinite God is interested in little you and little me. How much are you interested in God?
Why not worship the God who cared enough to send His Son in a Bible-believing, Bible-teaching Christ-exalting local church this coming Lord=s Day.
