God's First Commandment
The first of God's Ten Commandments says, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" Exodus 20:3. This means that the living God, even the Lord Jesus Christ should be our first love. We must love the Lord our God with all our hearts. But if I love God with all my heart, will I be able to love my parents and friends? Indeed, I will.
A young beggar boy was adopted from the streets in India into a Christian family. He was puzzled when his new parents asked him to give them all his clothes. Those filthy rags were all he owned. But when he gave them up he was given a whole new wardrobe of clean clothes!
When we give up our imperfect, selfish, sinful life, God puts into our hearts His perfect unselfish life and love so that we can love Him best and others also as we should. "The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us" Romans 5:5. We "are taught of God to love one another" First Thessalonians 4:9.
Having no other gods before the Lord also means keeping from idols--
"We don't have to worry about idols, do we, Dad?" asked a little boy. "We don't worship idols in this country."
"Wait just a minute," said his Dad. "Let's check what the dictionary says the word idol or god means."
The boy looked it up. "Dad, it says an idol is a statue or image, but it can also be a person or thing that is the chief object of one's love. What does that mean?"
"It means that your god or idol is whatever is most important to you."
The boy thought for a minute and said, "That must mean that if getting a dirt bike is more important to me than anything else, it is my god! I guess that commandment is for us today."
1 John 5:21 says, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
