The Giraffe
A giraffe has a long neck—a very long neck. Altogether giraffes are about 16 to 18 feet tall. Giraffes live in groups with other animals such as zebra, antelopes, gazelles, and ostriches. Because of their height and their exceptionally good eyesight, they serve as lookouts for the rest of the herd. They can spot an enemy a long way off. In spite of their shyness and peace loving disposition, they are well able to defend themselves against the big cats who every now and then attempt to attack them. Their big hooves are deadly and a lion who has a tangle with them once will seldom try it again.
The giraffe is, however, completely peaceful. The giraffe has a heart that is as big as all outdoors, as they say. The heart of this animal weighs more than 23 pounds and pumps 51.5 quarts of blood a minute. This force is necessary to pump blood all the way up that long neck to reach the brain. When the giraffe bends his neck to drink, his circulation is regulated by special valves or too much blood to the head would kill him.
The giraffe's long neck enables him to eat leaves that are beyond the reach of other ground dwelling animals. The Arabs call the giraffe “zarafah,” that is, “nice creature who walks with a sure tread.”
God’s children, those who have placed their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and Him alone for salvation, should be like the giraffe. God’s children should be peaceful, having made peace with God through the blood of Jesus’ cross (Ephesians 2:13,14) and enjoying the peace and quietness of God in their hearts by faith (Philippians 4:6,7). God's children should have a big heart, being kind and willing to do for others as opportunity allows (Galatians 6:10), but regulating their love by knowledge and judgment (Philippians 1:9). God’s children should stand tall in the world, different from the children of the world and the devil (Ephesians 4:17,18,22,24). God’s children should live above the world, feasting their minds on things above, heavenly things, not loving the things of the earth (Colossians 3:1,3). God’s children should keep watch because the enemy is always near (I Peter 5:8). God's children should be new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), nice creatures who walk with sure footsteps, confident in the living Lord (Ephesians 5:15,17).
Are you a child of God? Have You placed your complete trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your only God and only Saviour from sin? But as many as received Him, (Jesus Christ) to them gave He the power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on His Name (John 1:12). For you are...the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26).
