Defense
God has given His creatures all kinds of gadgets for self defense. The jacana, a bird found in the American tropics, has spurs which unfold like a switchblade at the bend of the bird=s wings and with which it can slash its enemies to shreds.
Lizards are professionals in warding off attack. The two-headed skink, whose tail is shaped like his head, confuses his enemy.
In order to travel in a hostile world, the Portugese man-of-war is able to float by inflating a purple bag with gas from a special gland. It can also sail by means of a special sail which it can raise or lower. Finally it can force air out of its float and submerge when severely threatened.
Land is trouble for most fish when they flop out or when the pond dries up. Not so for the lungfish. It is an air breather and must come to the surface every twenty minutes or so or it will drown. When the ponds of Africa dry up in the dry season, the lungfish wrap themselves in mud and wait it out, sometimes for years!
The horned-toad of the southwest United States will shoot a fine spray of blood from its eyes when attacked.
The Christian who is truly born again though faith in the Lord Jesus Christ lives in a hostile world. The Christian=s enemies include the world, the old sinful self life, and the devil. But God has made us more than conquerors through Christ Who loves us. This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith (1 John 3:4) When we keep our hearts and minds fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ, when we keep Him as our first love, when we allow Him to be Lord of our lives, we enjoy victory against the sinful world. When we count on the fact that we are dead with Christ and raised again with a new life, we have victory over our sinful selves. And God tells us that in submission to God Himself we can resist the devil and he will flee or run from us. Who is he that overcomes . . . ? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:5). Are you on the victory side? Are you a winning Christian?
