God's Passover
It was enough! God's people, Israel were held and mistreated as slaves in the land of Egypt. God sent Moses and Aaron with a message to Pharaoh, the King of Egypt: "Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'Let My people go!'" And Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go." Exodus 5:1-2.
Nine times God made it known to Pharaoh and the people of Egypt that He is God Almighty, the Most High God, the only God, the Maker of heaven and earth. Each time Pharaoh, the King of Egypt said "NO!" and his stubborn heart became harder each time.
Now it was time for the tenth plague, the ultimate plague, the death of the firstborn. The LORD said to Moses, "I will bring yet one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. Afterward he will let you go from here." Exodus 11:1.
God gave special directions to His people. Each family was to take a perfect lamb. At the appointed time they were to kill it, and take some of its blood and put it over their door and on its sides. Then they were to roast the lamb and eat it with bags packed and shoes on their feet, ready to go. God said, "The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt." The children of Israel did so; just as the LORD had commanded. Exodus 12:13,28.
And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock. So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead. Then he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise and go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the LORD as you have said." Exodus 12:29-31.
It is the Lord's Passover. We are all slaves to self and sin and Satan. We are all under the sentence of death. Our hearts are stubborn and hard in unbelief, refusing to give God His rightful place, but God in His great love with which He loves us will pass over those who trust in the finished work of Christ. "Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us." 1 Corinthians 5:7. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23.
